Masters Hall of Fame Inducts Sifu Emanuel Bettencourt at Annual Awards Banquet

Costa Mesa, CA – The Masters Hall of Fame inducted Sifu Emanuel Bettencourt at the Fourteenth Annual Awards Banquet at the Costa Mesa Hilton on Saturday, June 22, 2013. Sifu Bettencourt is a 7th Degree Black Belt in Wun Hop Keun Do and Ka Ju Ken Bo and is known as “Mr. Hook Kick” in Germany where he lives and teaches.

Sifu Bettencourt was born in the country of Cape Verde and moved to Germany at the age of 14. He began his training in the martial arts in 1978 in Hamburg under Malia Bernal and later studied with Professor Al Dacascos, the founder of Wun Hop Kuen Do. He earned his First Dan in 1982. Sifu Bettencourt is the most successful Grand Champion in Europe, being a five-time World Champion in Semi-Contact Fighting and holding three world titles in Form competition. In competition he was known for his all-around skills and the speed of a lightweight, even though he fought as a heavyweight.

Eventually Sifu Bettencourt opened his own martial arts academy in Hamburg in 1995, and now runs Taiyo Sport Center. Since 1992 Sifu Bettencourt has also worked as an actor and a fight and stunt choreographer for both movies and television series in Germany. One of his most recent appearances was with Mark Dacascos, his close friend, training partner and the son of Al Dacascos, in the film Sultanin Sirri (Secret of the Sultan) in 2010. Sifu Bettencourt is also a teacher of stage fighting, corporal expression and stage acrobatics at Hamburg University.

“I am happy to accept this honor on behalf of the Board of Kajukenbo and the Wun Hp Kuen Do branch of martial arts,” said Sifu Bettencourt on his induction. “I am very proud to have been inducted at the same event as my dear teacher Malia Bernal. I owe much to her for my success, as well as to Professor Dacascos.”

The Masters Hall of Fame was founded in 1999 and is recognized as one of MastersHallBLACKthe premier Martial Arts events on the West Coast. The association recognizes exceptional Martial Arts Leaders and Legends through induction into the Masters Hall of Fame. This year the event honored Women in the Martial Arts and featured Full-Contact Muay Thai Champion Lisa King, aka “The Black Widow,” as guest speaker.
